Liquid Spill on Laptop – What to Do?
A liquid spill is a race against time. Cutting the power and drying it correctly determines whether your motherboard survives.
Whether your laptop survives depends 90% on what you do in the first few seconds.
🚨 EMERGENCY FIRST AID
- TURN IT OFF IMMEDIATELY: Hold the power button for 5-10 seconds until it forcefully shuts down. Do not wait for Windows to shut down gracefully!
- DISCONNECT POWER: Unplug the charger and any USB devices.
- REMOVE BATTERY (If external/removable).
- FLIP IT UPSIDE DOWN: Open the screen wide and place it in an inverted "V" (tent) shape on a towel to let gravity drain the liquid away from the motherboard.
What NOT to do:
- Do not turn it on to check if it works! This causes immediate short circuits.
- Do not use a hair dryer! It pushes liquid deeper and can melt the keyboard.
- Do not use rice! It doesn't work for laptops and introduces damaging dust.
After a spill the device needs proper diagnostics: assessing the damage, securing the drive and recovering data, and replacing components that can be swapped without soldering. Damage that requires motherboard-level repair goes to specialist board services and I will point you there straight away.

- Will rice fix a water-damaged laptop?
- NO. Rice will not pull moisture out of a laptop chassis, and rice dust only contaminates the components. What is needed instead is proper diagnostics at a service.
- Can I turn it on after it dries?
- We strongly advise against it. Even if water evaporates, minerals and sugars are left behind, eventually causing corrosion and shorts.
